latest soulshine moment...

sunday morning.  early spring sun pouring in through the multitude of windows in the kitchen/breakfast area.  sliding door open, allowing the cool morning breeze to waft through.  buttery-warm waffles out of the oven.  agave nectar to drizzle on top of them...

and sully, randomly belting out his own version of the "abc's".  a solo first!

giving thanks, 14 and a big happy birthday

Happy birthday, Soulshine!  Introduced to me a mere 3 years ago, I never imagined what a rewarding outlet you would turn out to be.  Today I am thankful for you.

My pioneer post - http://simplysoulshine.blogspot.com/2007/11/just-me.html

giving thanks

... my family.  New family and old.  For the years of laughter and warm memories and all the possibilities to come...

giving thanks

... the bills on the island in my kitchen.  Wierd?  Maybe.  But the optimist in me would like to remember that those bills represent a luxury in my life.  Something extra that maybe I don't have to have.  But I do.

giving thanks

... the smell of the salt in the Charleston air.  Growing up, that smell always reminded me of vacation.  Now, it reminds me of home.

giving thanks

It's the month of thanks-giving and I am feeling especially grateful and fortunate this year.  For everyday of this special month, I will be posting something i'm giving thanks for on November 25th (and every other day for that matter).

Coming in at the top of my list....

I am grateful for Sully's silliness.  Especially at bedtime.  There is this wierd invasion of the body snatchers thing that happens 30 minutes before his final "nigh, nighhhhht" and he gets overtaken with goofiness.  I can't help but join in on his antics - it's refreshing and the very best part of my day.

taking stock

A car accident in Lancaster on Tuesday night has brought some things into perspective for me. My young cousin, a passenger in the car, escaped with only a broken arm, however, her friend was not quite so lucky. Fifteen, beautiful, and now a fatality... a statistic, from what should have been a fun night out in the last week of 2009. My mom works with the mother of the girl who was killed. She said that when she and her husband got to the hospital and received the news, the mother was so upset, staff attendings had to give her a shot and the father almost had a heart attack.

I cannot stop thinking about them. Their pain. The awful moment when they were told that they would never see their daughter again. Even though I don't know these folks, I had a hard time cooking dinner last night for wanting to cry. I think about the day their daughter was born and how they never could have imagined that this would be the end of her journey. I look at Sully and pray that John and I never know that pain. A funny thing happens when you become a parent. It's like you've joined a secret club, a brotheren, and when you hear tragic stories, like this one, you begin to "what if" your own child into that sitution and your heart breaks even more.

Although my thoughts and prayers are going out to them repeatedly, I woke up this morning feeling happy and blessed. Do we cherish every day the way we should? Do we look around and (honestly) count our blessings? Probably not. We get caught up in griping about work, the afternoon traffic, chores around the house... I could go on all day. When things like this happen, it makes you take inventory. It's the door to the reality that all of our blessings could be gone in an instant. We have to enjoy them while they last.

So that's MY New Year's Resolution. I'm going to take stock in 2010. Look around everyday. Get on the floor and play with Sully. Kiss John at unexpected moments. Call friends more often. And play in the rain if the chance arises. I can't look back one day and say that I didn't absorb all of the best possible moments that I could.

Here's to a safe, fun New Year's Eve and a happy, prosperous 2010!!!!

Trace Adkins - "You're Gonna Miss This"
She was starin out the window of their SUV
Complainin sayin I can't wait to turn 18
She said I'll make my own money
And I'll make my own rules
Momma put the car in park out there in front of the school
And she kissed her head, and said
'I was just like you'

You're gonna' miss this
You're gonna' want this back
You're gonna' wish these days
Hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna' miss this

Before she knows it she's a brand new bride
In her one bedroom apartment
And her daddy stops by
He tells her it's a nice place
She says, 'It'll do for now'
Starts talkin' about babies, and buyin a house
Daddy shakes his head
And says baby just slow down

Cuz' you're gonna' miss this
You're gonna' want this back
You're gonna' wish these days
Hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna' miss this

Five years later there's a plumber
Workin' on the water heater
Dog's barkin', phone's ringin'
One kid's cryin' one kid's screamin'
And she keeps apologizin'
But he says they don't bother me
I've got two babies of my own
One's thirty- six, one's twenty- three
Huh, it's hard to believe

But you're gonna' miss this
You're gonna' want this back
You're gonna' wish these days
Hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna' miss this
You're gonna' miss this
Yeaahhhh... you're gonna' miss this...

there is an amazing breeze, soaked in saltiness.

the skies are blue, just a few perfectly placed cotton balls up there.

the sun is shining, bright.

the forecast said 90, but i'm chilling in the high 70's.

it could not be a more pleasant fall day.

thank you Earth for making such a perfect day.

thank you God for letting me experience it.

"There shall be eternal sunshine in the grateful heart." - Celia Thaxter

In the midst of frustration at work today, I decided to step back and take a breath. Several breaths. Deep breath in... and out... ahhhhhh!

I clicked the mouse, at my right, onto "blogspot" and snuck away from work into my own little cyberworld and continued to breath my cares away. But somewhere in the midst of my breathing, I got sidetracked... stuck... on a word.

Soulshine!

It's in the title of my blog, the Allman Brothers wrote a song about it, but what exactly is soulshine? As I muttled through my free-flow of thoughts, I decided there was no better cure to my anxiety than to think about what soulshine means. So here goes!

To me, Soulshine is......

*Knowing that I've made someone else smile

*The oh-so tiny baby that peacefully sleeps in my belly

*The first hug from John when he comes home from work

*Laughing

*Listening to great music in the car, with all the windows down (even more fabulous on those perfect Spring days)

*Coming home to my waggly tailed, toy in tow, pup, who is always happy to see me

*The smell of freshly bloomed lilies

*Delighting in the company of my lady-friends at Charleston's newest cookie bakery

*Family vacations

*The first snuggle into my sateen sheets before I go to sleep at night

*Unexpected surprises

*Witnessing the vast beauty that God has bestowed upon this earth

*The swings at Waterfront Park

*Knowing that I am strong enough to resist temptation

*Fireworks

*Sweet, encouraging emails from my Dad

*New car smell

*That empowered feeling I get right after a good, long workout

*Blowing out the candles on your birthday cake while your loved ones attempt to serenade you

*A change of scenery - whether big or small - new colors, new sounds, new smells (it's good for the soul)

*LIFE! Being here, living (really living) everyday, and showing God that he did not put this body & soul here to waste

Tissue Please

5:30, yesterday afternoon: The moment I've been anticipating ALL day. WORKS OVER and I can finally take my runny nose, sore throat, non-functioning brain HOME. To the couch I go!

9:30, last night: Me! Drowning in a sea of tissues and vicks vapor rub! I extinguish the last ounce of energy in my body to prepare a bowl of Campbell's Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup (the cure all) and bury my face into the coolness of my blue suede pillow.

10 o'clock: A slight tap on the door, ever so faint. Who could that be?

It was the new squeeze, who, for Soulshine's sake I will now refer to as Ace - my Ace of Spades (I smile). He was there to rescue me from my sneezing, coughing, and inability to breath, and like a scene from a Harlequin romance novel, my hair caught the wind as I reached to embrace.

SNEEZE! (all over his blue cotton shirt sleeve)

He didn't care. He kissed me.

SNEEZE! (into his left ear drum, which I'm sure wasn't the most pleasant moment of his life)

He told me I looked beautiful - the liar! My nose painted a color red that Granny Smith only wishes for her apples, hair has somehow formed a bird's nest in the back in which I'm certain that something has taken residence, no makeup, no shower, chloraseptic breath, and holey Pink Floyd t-shirt paired with the most hideous sweat pants that somehow make my sore throat feel slightly better as I slip each leg in. BEAUTIFUL - HA!

At any rate, he is there to take care of me. What more could I ask for?!

Sighs & Sneezes,

Love Struck

Happy Thanksgiving!

As I look around today, I realize how many wonderful things I have to be thankful for. In a world that is filled with such violence and strife, I count myself one lucky lady to be nestled in such a cozy existence and living a life where I often take for granted that which some view as a tremendous blessing. That being said, I don't feel that I adequately thank God for the many blessings that have been handed to me, so TODAY I want to take a moment and reflect on a few of the things that make this life so incredible! Hopefully, on the next day that finds me a little less than satisfied, this list can serve as a reminder of everything I have to be thankful for!

~ My amazing family who never fails to make me laugh & is always there when I need them
~ A group of friends who have become like family
~ Tucker, my oh-so-sweet puppy dog
~ A closet full of GREAT shoes :)

~ That most delicious fried turkey that dad spent the morning preparing
~ A home
~ The view I have on my commute to and from work

~ Freedom
~ The scent of fresh lilies stirring throughout my apartment
