hippity hoppity easter's on its way

i dyed easter eggs with sully yesterday.  7 cups with 7 colors all lined in a row and he wanted to dip every egg in every color.  even though all 10 eggs came out in varying shades of puke green with cracks galore, it was the most fun i've ever had decorating easter eggs.  oh the love...

we're heading back to my family home tomorrow.  to celebrate easter.  to celebrate john's birthday.  to hunt easter eggs.  to eat and eat and eat and eat - wagon wheel, cookouts, easter lunch.  mmmmmmm.  i've left a note for the easter bunny so sully is sure to get all of his easter surprises.  it should be a fantastic weekend.  pictures to come.....

happy easter.

what's making me happy

- thoughtful strangers who hold the door.
- the first peek of sunshine after 36 hours of gray and rain.

- sully's hugs. and kisses. and songs. and giggles. and brown eyes.

homemade chicken salad and mom's spaghetti and meatballs, sitting in my refrigerator.

- the neighborhood mommies that are now my friends.

- witnessing the adoration that my parents feel for my son.

- blooming hydrangeas and fresh herbs that i'll be planting this weekend.

- giving life to dreams. with my husband.

- four friends who are "expecting". two for the first time.

- shopping for easter basket goodies.

- a sister i can laugh with even when the "big c" is staring us down.

- mint and eucalyptus hand soap.

- my stepson getting his second visit from the tooth-fairy.

- salty charleston air.

latest soulshine moment...

sunday morning.  early spring sun pouring in through the multitude of windows in the kitchen/breakfast area.  sliding door open, allowing the cool morning breeze to waft through.  buttery-warm waffles out of the oven.  agave nectar to drizzle on top of them...

and sully, randomly belting out his own version of the "abc's".  a solo first!

take the reins

think about what makes you happiest - the one
thing guaranteed to get your heart racing and a big
grin spreading across your face. got it? good.
now do that thing.  yes, today.  taking control of your
life is about knowing what you want and going after
it without hesitation.  you don't need permission.
you just need to know you deserve to be happy.

love, love, and more LOVE

happy valentine's day.

i'm not sure about all you others out there in the world but here in charleston it could not be a more beautiful day to celebrate the day marked for love.

i know there are many naysayers in the universe who call this holiday a cliche, only born to fill the pockets of every greeting card and candy industry tycoon stretching the globe.  but i say...

tish.tosh!

i am glad that, in a world that becomes more cynical with each passing day, we still have these capsules of time that dissolve an otherwise mundane day into something a little more beautiful.  special.  fun.  we all need a little more "fun" in our lives.

and you can't play the "i'm single and depressed" card with me because i've been that single and depressed girl on valentine's day - wishing i had a man and wallowing in my own self pity.  to avoid feeling un-sexy on the sexiest of holidays, my friends and i would protest.  "anti-valentine's, valentine's day". we made anti-valentine's cd mixes.  put on our best pushups.  went out.  toasted drink after drink to being single and fabulous.  and in an attempt to not celebrate, we ended up celebrating anyway.  those scattered, single, valentine's will go down as some of the greatest nights of my life.

so to all you wet blankets out there (yes, i said it) i say: get out of your own head, go buy a box of lindt truffles, sit on the couch with your love tonight, and indulge.  and if you don't have a love.... your friend... your dog... heck, by yourself (sometimes that's my favorite way to enjoy a good box of chocolate).   or go out with your drinking buddies.  drink one too many and get silly.  pop a bottle of champagne for the hell of it and let the bubbles do their job.  throw darts at a picture of cupid with another angry friend.

something.  anything!

use this day to remind everyone you care about - friend, girlfriend, mom, dad, sister, brother, cousin, cousin's friend martha, or whomever - that you care about them.

and enjoy it for what it is, for tomorrow it will be gone.  c'est la vie!

a whirlwind of days

so many many things to blog about since my last post, only a week and a half ago. last friday, the family packed up and headed for a midnight trip - literally - back to my hometown of lancaster.

saturday morning came early with a mere 4-1/2 hours of sleep under our belts.  but we made the short trek out to buford, south carolina to cheer my  nephew on at his basketball game.  that's him, way down there... number 15.  we got to spend some good quality time with my sister, brother in law, dad, and my nephew brooks, who was also celebrating his first birthday.  mom stayed home to get the house prepped for the birthday party that afternoon.  riley's team won and it was so awesome to be a part of that.

john and i also had a pretty good "lol" moment.  as we were walking out of the rec. center, john was complaining that he smelled baby "puke".  i reminded him that the birthday boy had spit up during the game and maybe it was on his shirt.  as we got closer to the car, i began to smell it.  and soon enough we were overpowered.  near gagging, trying to convince john to ditch his shirt and making what i'm sure was a spectacle, we hear this guy from across the parking lot yell, "it's the turkey farm down the road."  now if only blogspot could verbalize the accent.  this guy, who john and i had chuckled at all morning for having his whole family (including the wife) decked out in camo, was the most country feller i've ever heard speak.  it sounded a little more like, "eeets da turrrrkey form down tha rooooad".  we laughed not only at his accent but that he probably hopped in his mud flapped, oversized tires, ford truck and said "stupid city people.  never smelled turkey shit before!"

after a little shopping around town with my sister and some golf for the guys, the entire family came over to celebrate with a birthday party for 2 very special boys - sully (2) and brooks (1).  here are some highlights....

sully's homemade birthday cake... (elmo was courtesy of this gal)

brooks had an adorable dr. seuss cake, made by a local lady in lancaster

sporting his new "2" shirt, specially made by this gal

and checking out his balloons

sully decided that he wanted his cake for dinner.  and on birthdays, we get what we want -

this is what i like to call "drunk on cake"...

sully and mommy

brooks was not a happy camper.  i'm sure he's praying to the toy gods that he never sees this hat again.

so while he was getting squared away, we sang "happy birthday" to sully

and then brooks was ready for his cake.  testing the waters -

getting more into it -

definitely got the hang of it -

the boys had a "few" presents to open.  more like a mound!

and then it was time to crash from all the fun!

with sunday being sully's actual birthday, we decided to take him to the columbia zoo on the way back to charleston - he has been obsessed with "phants" (elephants) lately.  it was a gorgeous, 70 degree, january sunday - that's south carolina for you.  i'm sad to say i don't really have any pictures to post from our excursion because sully was somewhat of a pickle.  it took us two hours of walking around to discover the secret - fish and m&m's.  so next time we go to the zoo, we know to start with that!  ;)

after a quick visit to the hospital to see john's granny, we headed back home as the sun was setting.  sully crashed and i made a quick dash to redbox so john and i could watch "the town" which we've been dying to see.  didn't disappoint!  during the movie, i managed to whip out a batch of birthday cookies for sully to take to daycare on monday and we were all snoring by 10:30.

tuesday brought another trip to lancaster, as my dad checked into the hospital for a triple bypass.  you expect hospital waiting rooms to be exhausting, in the boring kind of way - we had our moments of worry, don't get me wrong - but with 12 members of my family all crammed together it was mostly laughs and good memories.  dad came through his surgery beautifully, ignoring the big scar down the middle of his chest.  i'm sure i will blog about this experience at a later date, but for now he is well and recovering in the hospital until early next week.

by the time i got back to charleston on wednesday, just in time for sully's two-year checkup, i felt like i had been pummeled by one of the zoo lions.  but it took nothing more than a running hug from sully, after 36 hours of worry and wait, to cure me.

is it wrong...

to laugh at your own blog post?  My wonderful sister-in-law is, right at this very moment, in labor in Atlanta.  Filled with anticipation to hear that my new little nephew Jackson has made his arrival, I started reminiscing on Sully's birth.  So I re-read my own "birth story" that I blogged last year.  I laughed out loud (and maybe cried a little).  A re-post felt completely necessary, so here goes...

two good moments today

  • School started back in Summerville today.  I was stopped in traffic in front of our neighborhood elementary school watching all of the adorable and eager kids walking across the parking lot towards their first day.  I spotted a dad, in his army fatigues, carrying a baby in one arm and a video camera in the other.  He was video taping his daughter, i'm assuming a first grader, in her cute little dress and blonde hair walking into her first day of school.  It was such a precious moment and true representation of parenthood - especially for this moment our country's history.  I had to wonder if dad had recently returned from overseas or maybe he was about to leave.  You never know.  And regardless, I had to choke back the tears.

  • On my lunch break, I was driving through the College of Charleston campus and saw a young boy and girl (18/19ish).  They were standing behind a car, maybe coming or maybe going, but she dropped her bag and leaped into his arms.  He scooped her off the ground and they must have hugged like that for a good thirty seconds. Normally, I would have had thoughts like "gag me".  But for some reason today I embraced witnessing that sweet moment between two young people in love.  It made me a little jealous that John and I don't hug like that anymore.  Jealous enough that I might just try it tonight!

taking time

I was waiting outside one of my favorite Charleston spots (Kickin Chicken) for a to-go lunch order on Tuesday. Thinking. People watching. I looove to people watch. And coming down the sidewalk I spotted a group of 3: Mom, Son (3ish), and Grandmother (i'm assuming). Mom was sprinting to get inside while Granny and baby boy were strolling a good 20 feet back - they were hand holding and laughing. And Mom was missing it! Granted, I don't know the circumstances. Maybe this wasn't even her son. Maybe Granny rarely gets to see baby boy so Mom was giving them space. Maybe baby boy was mad at Mom and didn't want to hold her hand. Maybe Mom had explosive diarrhea. I don't know. My eyes can only interpret what they saw... and that was a Mom who was not present in a beautiful moment with her Son and Mother.

It made me sad. Not really sad for the boy because he looked content. It made me sad for Sully; and for me (if that makes any sense)… sad for all the moments where that may have been me – rushing and not pausing to enjoy hidden moments that may never come again. Although Sully and I have many, MANY great moments together, I know there are times that I miss out and don't even realize. Like when I opt to surf the internet while John takes him for a stroll outside or when I coerce him to play with his toys so I can catch up on Young & the Restless.

And it’s not just with Sully. There are so many things happening in my life that I speed through and don’t appreciate until they’re over. I have this strange tendency to enjoy events more in theory than when they actually occur because I allow stress to dominate my other emotions. It can be one of the great obstructions from life’s pleasures and one that I frequently combat. Case in point - the day I was fitted for my wedding gown. I should have been GLOWING. Instead I was hurried and flustered because it was a “hectic” day. I had to make a conscious effort to stop and savor that moment. Indulge in the fact that the wedding dress I had been waiting months for was lying in the back of my car and it was just as beautiful as I had anticipated.

Sitting there in the Kickin Chicken parking lot, I resolved myself to get caught up in the little moments with Sully (and with everything for that matter). As fate would have it, I got a lesson all too soon. Sully had a seizure (his first) 4 hours after my lunch revelation. Seizures are not a part of my vocabulary. No one in my family has ever had one, I have never had one, and don’t have any friends that have them. So when the daycare called to tell me, unthinkable images began to sprout through my mind. Fortunately (I guess you could say), the doctor said it was due to a fast spike in his fever brought on by pneumonia and a double ear infection which apparently is common. Regardless of how serious or not, that was enough of a jolt for me. Like a sign from God. It feels so cliché saying it but I will anyway – we are not promised any amount of days on this earth and right now, starting today, I want to make sure that whether its 20 days or 20,000, I live them the best that I possibly can. That I max out as much caring and sharing, fun and laughter as I possibly can so that Sully’s life can be full of great days and one day he we can look back and think "what a wonderful life".

wifey

that's right! on the perfect day of june 5th, i choked back (happy) tears as my dad escorted me down an aisle of fresh grass to the oh-so-handsome groom standing at the other end. there, overlooking breathtaking hillsides of pasture in the heat of a southern afternoon, we said "i do" and shared a night of dining and dancing with our friends and family in a beautifully restored 1940's barn.

i'll say it again - perfect!

it's incredible to me how one day, one afternoon even, gave me so much more than just a husband that i adore. it added a new meaning to my life. a security i've never completely known. it offered me the clarity of appreciating the friends and family who truly, deeeeeply love us - those who will be there to celebrate in life's joyous moments and on whom we can lean in the harder ones. beyond invaluable.

i am blessed. we are blessed.

No. You're not seeing things. Stop the presses. It's really me. Typing. On blogspot. For the first time in months.

I would try to list a million excuses, and chances are it wouldn't be that difficult to come up with them, but there really is no honest excuse except that i'm a total SLACKER!

You know that feeling... like when you intend to call a friend you haven't talked to in ages to thank them for a sweet card or gesture or maybe you just happened upon them at the local market and promised a phone call to set up a lunch date. Yesterday passed and you got wrapped up in work, today you're still dragging from the wine you had last night and just don't have the energy, but tomorrow - TOMORROW you will call.

Soon enough it's 4 weeks 3 days and 22 hours later and even though you've told yourself every single day to call, you just didn't and it almost feels like it's too late to even bother.

That's how i've been feeling about my little blog-e-roo. I've seen some terribly quirky things that reminded me of this special nook in my life. And though I wanted badly to post those terribly quirky things it just felt so inadequate when i've been MIA for this long.

Nevertheless, here I am and I have more updates than I know how to type and more than i'm sure you care to read. So this is me dipping my toes in the pool. Check out some things I probably would have blogged about had I not been slacking....

* A signed contract to build a house at the beginning of February. Set to be complete at the end of June.
* A continually growing love for Sully (if you can believe it) who turned one and took his first solo steps since I last wrote.
* A wedding date set at a beautiful old barn in SC - June 5th - and the flurry of stress and excitement surrounding it that i'm sure will make into the pages of a future blog
* Several amazing parties in honor of mine and John's love
* A knee replacement surgery for Dad and his successful recovery
* A visit from my favorite DC-ians (did I say that wrong?)
* The birth of a nephew and news that another niece or nephew is on the way
* A new Canon digital SLR camera (that i've been dying for) as a present and HUGE surprise from John on Mother's Day
* 2 new favorite websites that deserve a blog post of their own
* A vegetable lasagna recipe that John has fallen madly in love with
* A birthday shout out to Tucker who turned 7
* A case of pink-eye for the little guy and some crazy expensive medicine that comes in a little itty bitty bottle
* A best friend's surprise 30th birthday party
* Sully's first experience with egg dye - we did pretty good
* News that my best friend is relocating with her family to Portland, Maine (a new place to visit!!)
* An obsession with paint colors, and just colors in general
* An invitation to the graduation of my cousin who I babysat after I graduated high school (talk about feeling old!)
* A snow storm in Charleston on Valentine's weekend - aka. mine and John's first scheduled date in 6 months that was interrupted when the babysitter called to say the power went out. Charleston's first snow in 10 YEARS on our one date night!!!
* The engagement of two dear friends
* A new hair color - back to my roots brown

Now I promise that we'll talk again soon. I won't stray away for too long because there's lots to be said. :)

blogging for boredom

these last few days at work have been so slow. and when i say slow i mean maaaaybe 5 phone calls in one day, zero closings, zero projects for me to immerse myself in, and the sound of the air conditioner buzzing in my ear all day long. slow! so to kill some time, here i am, blogging. blogging about who knows what. stuff. instead of spring cleaning, i am fall cleaning... my mind. (i'm excited, so I sit up proper-like in my chair and brush my hair back)

speaking of hair, i got a new cut. the evening before our flight took off to dc (2 weeks ago) i dragged john to my fabulous hairstylist, trayce, back home for some much needed hair therapy. john was looking like a shaggy mess, my split ends had split ends and to let you know how bad it was, trayce winced when i pulled my ponytail down and said "ooh, this is pre-tty bad court". she's never said that to me - not in the 13 years since i started going to her. 13 years is quite an accomplishment, p.s.! that's longer than most marriages last. maybe i should send her a "thanks for keeping the hair on my head all these years" card. so anyway, she's asking me what i want to do with my moptop and i say "i don't care". so she looks to john and john says, "how does your hair look short". fabulous! so short i got. 3 inches shorter to be exact - right up to my chin-line and i love it. i felt new and improved. it's amazing how a haircut, even just a trim, can do that for you. then john hopped in the chair for his first "professional" hair cut. he goes to sportclips and thinks he's getting a good cut. ha! i wanted him to see what a real stylist could do. and do, she did. it was his best cut yet. we left there feeling like a million bucks and ready for our adventure.

but before our adventure, we did a little birthday celebration - for me! at that point, my birthday was still 2 weeks away but we celebrated early - we're rebels like that. so we joined my family at a local wing-joint, leo's (legendary raw fries!), and grubbed. then we ventured back to my parent's house for singing, cake, presents, and the funniest damn joke i've ever heard in my life. my uncle, big gavin, who is notorious for his ability to draw a laugh, tells this "potato chip" joke and the whole room was dying from laughter. just crying. i don't even know how he told it with a straight face. he's been telling this joke for 25 years. 25 years! let's be real, people. a joke has to be pretty good to hang around for 25 years. so if you know big gavin, the next time you see him, you have to make him tell it.

4 am the next morning came pretty quickly, and john and i hit the road towards the charlotte airport, leaving sweet baby and the doggie with my parents. at 9am we landed in baltimore to see the beautiful face of my bff, her hubby, and their little boy. we had 3 full days to enjoy their company, see their new home situated nicely in a suburb of dc, sight-see, party, and exhaust ourselves. we walked, what felt like, the entire length of the city, saw some amazing sites, went on an eventful all-day (should have been 2 hour) tubing trip with them and another couple (that day could be a whole blog in itself), ate some scrumptious sushi and to-die-for fried mashed potato and blue cheese balls, drank beer, and just chilled. some time away was much-needed for me and john and we couldn't have spent our time and money in a better place!

tuesday morning came and i was ready to see my little boy. so we hopped another plane and headed back. it was so good to see him and hold him. all i wanted to do was snuggle with him for a month and stare at his sweet smile. only, there wasn't much snuggle time like i had anticipated. wednesday morning woke to find me sick. sick as a dog. actually, i've never understood the expression "sick as a dog", but whatever. i was sick. like an idiot, i went online to discover that i had all the symptoms of the swine flu. needless to say i spent the better part of the day freaking out that i was infected, everyone i had encountered was infected, what was i going to do, poor little sully and all the babies in his daycare - ahhhhhhhh. but the doctor did a nose-swab and said all of my hysteria was for nothing because it wasn't swine flu. it wasn't even the regular flu. it was an upper respiratory infection. silly me! she gave me 2 days off of work (god bless her) and home i went. i already blogged about this so i'll stop with that.

so i worked 1 day in a span of 2 weeks - pretty awesome.

i spent this past weekend recovering from my non-swine flu and from a heartbreaking loss with the usc game and come monday, it was my birthday. still a 20-something. i wasn't feeling completely up to snuff yet, so when john asked what i wanted to do that night, i was confident in saying "stay in". he and sully surprised me with a birthday cake, lit with 20-something ( :) ) candles and a fabulous homemade spaghetti dinner. after sully dozed off, john and i rented the new kate & leo flick, revolutionary road, and vegged out. i even got a shoulder and foot rub. it was perfect. there's nothing like a birthday to make you feel loved. dozens of excited people calling to serenade you and cards expressing their love. it's the besssssssst!

now things are winding down a bit and i'm looking forward to a weekend with nothing planned besides a possible trip to the mall. it's supposed to be a rainy one this weekend and there's nothing like staying in, in your jammies and all-day movie marathons on those dark messy days. and snuggling with a little sweet pea.

a day of firsts

i know that no one will believe me when i say this but.... sully said "da da" today! looking at john, loud and clearly, he said "da da". and on mother's day of all days!!! john and i were the only people that heard and i'm quite sure that we won't hear it again for some time, but regardless, he said it.

may 10th, 2009 - sully greider said his first word!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Along with it being my very first Mother's Day and the day of Sully's first word, there was another big first. Sully was Christened today at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lancaster, SC.

I was so proud of my little fellow. He never made a single peep, not even when they sprinkled him with water. Of course, we've been practicing for that in the bathtub.

After the Christening, we had lunch at Adrienna & Gavin's house and Sully gave me a new Willow figurine for Mother's Day. It was nice to have mine & John's family together, united for such a special reason.

The whole day was sweet and perfect.

3.05.2009

my new favorite thing...

is his smile.

My Sully

Wow! That's really the only way that I know to start this blog considering how much my life has changed since I last posted. Maybe i'll say it one more time for good measure... wow!

Let's see, where do I begin? Well... I guess there was that whole labor & delivery thing - that's a good jumping off point. As I mentioned, we kept hearing an abundance of "any day now" 's, but nothing ever seemed to happen. So, at 6:45am on January 30th, we loaded our bags in the car, filled the dog food bowls, and burned rubber to the hospital for an induction.

I was officially into a hospital gown and induced at 8am and so began our journey. Even though it lasted a whole day, it seems to have all gone by in about 2 hours. Did I black out from the lack of food and sleep? Possibly. By 10:45 I had received an epidural before even a handful of painful contractions. I'm sure I should thank my lucky stars that there was minimal suffering but it does take some of the glory away that I can't, one day, look at Sully and say, "do you know how many hours of pain and misery I went through for you to be here?" That being said, the pain of the actual epidural was quite enough for one day. Kudos to any woman (or man) out there who has had the pleasure.

But moving on... several large pricks (and what felt like a steel rod being shoved up my back) later, I was completely numb from the lower boob region on down leaving me completely helpless. I remember laying there thinking, "how in the HELL am I going to push? I can't even lean up enough to reach that tv remote that i'm dying for." (even labor wasn't enough to keep me away from the Lifetime daytime line-up)

So there I am - hair fixed, store bought & monogrammed hospital gown on, and the antics of Will & Grace in the back ground - when I feel something funny down below. Is this normal? What is this? Should I tell the nurse I have to use the bathroom? Oh, it's just a little gas. That's cool. My normal M.O. would be to hold it in with the good ol' butt clench (and don't act like you don't know what i'm talking about). Call me crazy but I just can't comfortably fart in front of people - even John who, let's face it, is certainly not modest and has seen me in just about every compromising situation since I found out I was pregnant. And I'm in labor for crying out loud! A little fart here and there is to be expected, right? Still, I just wasn't comfortable so I proceeded to a butt squeeze, only, I couldn't squeeze. Total and complete numbness. Crap! I could feel it working it's way out and panic was over-taking. Then it happened... and I swear to God the look on John's face was priceless. To get out, that poor little fart had to work it's way through the pounds of goop my doctor had slathered in my never regions, creating a sound that was less like a fart and more like the rumbling of a volcanic eruption. Jaw to the floor, John dropped the phone he was talking on and said, "holy shit, was that a fart?". God, how embarassing. Unfortunately that was the first of many and none seemed to make their arrival when I was alone.

4-1/2 hours, 5 popsicles, 4 visitors, & 1 sunflower later there had been very little progress. The baby was not moving down the way he should be (stubborn!) and was also having negative reactions to the pitocin that they used to induce. Apparently, I have a narrow pelvic bone. Who knew? Baby's head was just too big to make it through so the doctor recommended a c-section. Although it really was not the way I had envisioned the whole thing going, at that point, I was tired, hungry, uncomfortably numb, and cursing the bed to which I felt like a chained prisoner. With a nod and a wink, John and I said "okay".

A quick shave and morphin drip and we were off to the surgical room that, during lamaze I referred to as "the room I will never have to go into". I guess someone showed me! As they wheeled me out and down the hall, my Dad popped out from around a corner with a video camera telling me to smile. At the time, I really wanted to toss a bed rail at his head, but now that i've gotten to watch the video I couldn't be happier that he recorded that moment so I can always have it.

I remember laying on that table feeling like I had been beamed up into a space ship and the aliens were about to operate on me. I was on morphin (for one), the lights were bright, the room was ice cold, I was layed out on a table with arms outstretched, and I could hear the muffles of people talking but couldn't see anyone due to the big blue curtain draped in front of my head. I wondered if I was completely naked from boobs down to toes and my whole pregnant body was just spread out for all the world to see. Probably so.

John was right there beside me, holding my hand, telling me he loved me as the doctors moved in. I could feel them jerking my insides around but never felt an ounce of pain. It took them about 20 minutes to prep me and actually get down to where the baby was. I asked the doctor if, while they were in there, they could lipo some fat out. The whole room went into an uproar of laughter. The doctor then told me that I was about to feel a heaviness on my chest from them pushing the baby down; then he would be here. Lord the anticipation!

And then... heaviness on the chest. "The head's out". "Left shoulder out". "Right shoulder out". "He's heeeeeere". I could feel every inch of his little body being pulled out of mine. Then, I heard his first little cry. It was the most indescribable moment of my life and I instantly began to cry (i'm even getting emotional just sitting here writing about it). Honestly, if I could re-live any single moment of my entire life, that would be it. I quickly asked the doctor's if he had 10 fingers, 10 toes, and a penis. Yes!

When they brought him around the curtain and I got to see his little face for the first time, my heart just wanted to explode. His cries sounded so sweet and innocent and all I wanted to do was hold him in my arms.

I had to be sowed back up, so John went with the baby to the nursery. The 25 minutes following felt like an eternity. But, they passed, and I was carted off to the recovery room where John and Sully were not far behind. As they were taking me to recovery, my parents were waiting in the hall and I remember my Dad saying, "he's so beautiful, Courtney."

Beautiful he was! My sweet, healthy, beautiful baby boy came into this world 7 pounds 9 ounces, 20-1/2 inches long, a few wisps of hair, and not a single blemish on his perfect little skin. An angel.

Since there is much more to write, a baby crying in the background, and I have already written a novel, i'll save the rest for a rainy day. But for now, mommy, daddy, and baby are doing great!

"life will never be the same"

"On the night you were born, the moon shone with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered 'Life will never be the same.' Because there had never been anyone like you... ever, in the world."

-- An excerp from Nancy Tillman's book, On The Night You Were Born

With the baby coming "any day now", according to my doctor, you can only imagine how consumed I am with everything baby. I bought On The Night You Were Born at my most recent Barnes & Noble rendezvous (can't get enough of that place). When John read it aloud to me and the belly on Sunday night, I could hardly control the swells of tears in my eyes. The whole book is so true and perfectly worded that I can't imagine one single day passing that I won't read it to baby Collins.

So, like I said, i'm one brisk afternoon walk away from meeting this new little fellow and the anticipation mounts with every passing day. Last night I had two strong contractions that woke me from sleeping and I lept out of the bed thinking "THIS IS IT! IT'S TIME!". WRONG! Can you imagine being completely prepared (well, almost completely) for something and then having to sit idly by and wait with absolutely no hint of when it's coming? Have you ever been stuck in the airport for a flight delay? Every minute that passes is another minute that you get older and more antsy wondering when the hell your flight will be ready. Well... this is SO much worse than that! It's exhausting! I need to meet this guy - hear his sweet baby cries - and know that all ten fingers and toes are properly placed.

As intense and overwhelming as I make it all sound, my latest blood pressure reading indicated otherwise. I'm as cool as a cucumber. Is someone slipping me Xanax? I wouldn't be surprised. I'm feeling more relaxed than EVER before. I may even branch out to use the word "sedated". Calm. It's unusual. It's unexpected. And i'm loving it. I thought I was alone in this eerie calm until I read the blog of another hip prego who experienced the same thing. This calm has also brought about an over-powering love and adoration for John. I want to hug him and shout my love for him from the rooftops. If he only knew! Maybe it would be a good idea to tell him. Whatever this natural remedy is, i'm embracing it. It's certainly a nice change of pace from the raging and uncontrollable hormonal swings i've experienced the other 8-1/2 months.

Looks like the real Courtney is back. Or is this just the calm before the storm?

At any rate, I believe my fabulous friend, Rachel, put it best in an email she sent me this morning... "enjoy your last few moments before you become a mommy forever." Forever! I've never been so ready for "forever".

"Life will never be the same." **smiles & happy tears**
